How to find your next hiking route
Start route planning with the time available and your experience. Photographs provide inspiration but do not show every surface, obstacle or transport connection. Select a specific trail or section.
Read beyond the distance
Check elevation, ground conditions and waymarking. Confirm access to the start and whether the route is circular. If the finish is elsewhere, verify actual transport times. Allow room for breaks and unexpected detours.
Use current local information
Consult the trail manager, tourism office or protected-area authority for closures and seasonal restrictions. When walking with children or a pushchair, look for information about the exact section rather than assuming the whole route is suitable.
Match equipment to the plan
Choose footwear for the ground and clothing for the forecast. Water, food, map, headlamp and personal first aid form a useful starting kit. Identify a shorter alternative before setting off. Recheck weather and trail notices close to departure. Several manageable walks help you learn your pace and equipment needs before attempting a longer journey.
