Choosing and trying hiking footwear

Hiking footwear needs to suit your feet and usual terrain. A smooth woodland path and a rocky trail with a heavy pack place different demands on your shoes.

Match the route

Compare sole tread, flexibility, protection and walking feel. A higher ankle collar is not automatically best for everyone. Balance water protection and ventilation against the conditions you expect.

Make the fitting useful

  • Wear your hiking socks and usual insoles, if applicable.
  • Try both shoes and walk for several minutes.
  • Check that your toes do not strike the front when descending.
  • Watch for excessive heel lift or concentrated pressure.
  • Compare different shapes rather than simply increasing the size.

Test and maintain

Begin with short walks to learn the fit and lacing. Persistent pain is not a sensible compromise. Clean and dry footwear according to the manufacturer, using products suitable for its materials. Check soles, stitching and laces before the next trip. When buying online, read the size guide and return conditions for the specific pair.
