How to choose a backpacking tent

A backpacking tent balances carried weight with usable room. A compact model may suit one person but feel tight with two wide mats. The advertised capacity is only a starting point.

Check the actual space

Compare floor dimensions with your mats. Look at sloping walls, sitting height and vestibule space for wet footwear. Two doors may help when sharing, but consider their value alongside construction and weight.

Count the whole kit

Check whether the quoted weight includes poles, pegs, guy lines and bags. Add required accessories. Sharing components can spread the load, provided every part reaches the same campsite.

Practise before departure

Pitch the tent fully, check suitable anchors and follow ventilation instructions. Select a site appropriate to weather, ground and local rules. A three-season label does not confirm suitability for every route. Never cook in the tent or an enclosed vestibule. Dry the fabric afterwards and inspect poles, seams and zips. A short practice pitch helps identify missing parts while they are easy to replace.
